The French Louis XVI 18th-century marquetry chest with neoclassical escutcheons is a fine example of the neoclassical style that became popular during the late 18th century, under the reign of Louis XVI. This style marked a return to classical antiquity's clean lines, symmetry, and restrained ornamentation, moving away from the ornate Rococo style that preceded it.
